More closings

going-out-of-business

Wouldn’t it be great if we could get through a week without word of more closings? Alas, it is not to be. Just in case you haven’t heard, Woody’s in Upper is closing after the first of the year.  Something Special is closing Dec. 23.

  1. Woody’s closing comes as no surprise. My last meal there was consumed three years ago — and that was for a reason.

  2. Scout – Where did you get this photo. It kind of looks like the Egbert campaign headquarters.

  3. Ken, I’m surprised to read your dissing of Woody’s. My experience has been that The Steer Barn, which used to be Woody’s Steer Barn, hit the skids. We used to love going there but after Woody sold it, it deteriorated…we even gave it three chances…three straight disappointments. Don’t go there anymore. Woody’s, on the other hand, while lacking ambience alittle, always provided good food and good value in our opinion. To each his own, I guess.

  4. Right, Evan:

We generally avoid known venues for food poisoning

  5. Good policy but it never happened to me there.

  6. As someone who knows how to eat, I’ve not been impressed with Woody’s the last couple of times either. The food was okay, but not up to the hype. Kind of a glorified TJ Willies with higher prices. The Steer Barn has been “steer clear” for us for years–we kept thinking that it was just an off night, but after 3 or 4 off nights we concluded that maybe they were just off.

Try Moreno’s in Carey. Nice place and good food. Our only complaint has been service at really busy times, but overall we’ll continue to go back. Or for a real treat go to Roselli’s in Findlay. Once in the door it looks and feels like a Chicago type restaurant. Excellent food, good service. For the wife & I it is our first choice if going out to eat.

  7. I have always had excellent food and service at the Steer Barn. Woody’s was more pricey, and I wasn’t fond of the Victorian Atmosphere.

  8. My philosophy is: The FIRST TIME a restaurant ‘bites me,’ it’s THEIR FAULT. The SECOND TIME, it’s MY FAULT. [I never give them a second chance!

  9. Hey Ken–give ‘em a second chance. Restaurants are hard to run and staff. I had a bad experience at Moreno’s on New Year’s Eve a couple of years ago & even wrote a letter to complain. We’ve been back several times since and enjoyed it.

  10. Nope! Do it right each time, or — don’t do it to/for me! There are other folks in the business.

  11. We had our company Christmas party at Woody’s last night and the food was very good and so was the service. They were surprised to hear that they were closing and told me someone else had told them the same thing earlier in the week and there was NO truth to it at all. Can anyone confirm? This came from the manager since the owner was not there.

  12. Great, Elf. Hope you’re right. Another plus for Woody’s is that they treated my son and his girlfriend well a couple of weeks ago. I have seen that kids their age sometimes get dissed, even at restaurants my wife and I like. Seems they assume kids don’t tip or know what constitutes a nice restaurant experience. My kids know.

Scout…I sense the need for a thread, or category, or a link or whatever, on local and area restaurants.

  13. I made a trip to the Commissioners Office on Friday and they were not open. Does everyone that work at that office only put in part-time hours?

  14. They work part time and get paid full time hours? I think someone needs to be checking into that. The office stafff is never there on Fridays anymore. What a deal!!

  15. Are you going to the correct building? It was open when I went by.

  16. The commissioners position, via our state legislature, is considered part time. Their pay is determined, also via our state legislature, and reflects a part-time position pay. I do not concur with the assessment.

  17. Scout: I understand that the commissioners are considered part time, but what about the office staff?

  18. Check county payroll records. The office staff for the Commissioners are paid full-time with benefits. For normal county employees that means they work on Fridays.

  19. I wish I could get one of those part-time jobs that pay over $50,000 a year with benefits. Oh well, I guess I am too old to worry about working a couple days a week.

  20. Everybody wants more money. I want a big raise also.

  21. As I read the paper, it seems that the President of the Board of Commissioners is in charge in managing office hours at the Commissioners’ office.

However, word on the street is that he has been preoccupied with packing the bearings of the wheels on his campaign trailer and sealing-weather proofing the beautiful bold letters on his elevated sign. [Takes time to do all those good things! Who knows, maybe the office staff are helping him!]

  22. speak – I believe they are all full-time.

  23. There is no way the office staff works 40 hours a week-a have a friend who works there and the hours are very lenient, but they do get paid for 40.It is supposed to compensate for the extra time they put in traveling to and from meetings and everything else. She is also the only one that lives in this county-the other 2 do not. Now don’t you think is would be appropriate to hire people from this county? There are several I can think of making big bucks, that pay taxes in other counties-Soil and Water Administrator, Clerk Office, Dell’s Office, Commissioners., and the list goes on and on. Also there is going to be big changes to health insurance and I heard about a letter being written by recorders office in protest. I think we need to do some diggin and ask Dell about it.

  24. Everyone who pays for county insurance took approximately a $100 per pay period pay cut.

The “new” insurance plan that the president of the board deemed “good” cost the county employees about 26% more than last year.

Every year from now until that new “awesome” plan expires will cost each county employee approximately 25% per year for 3 years.

So….take any “raises” you hear about into account when you decide that county employees are overpaid.

Although….it beats the hell out of being a City of Bellevue employee….who have endured a 165% increase in insurance premiums over the past 2 years with an additionaly 40% coming this year.

    All Hail Obama!!!
(hopefully he will fix it….although, I seriously doubt it can be fixed at this point)

  25. Just my opinion but National health care does nothing but line the pockets of insurance companies, it’s almost the equivalent of a bail-out, because it guarantees some insurance company a whole lot more customers. These City and County employees should stop complaining and be glad they are not self insured like some of us.

  26. anon-

Thanks for explaining! I heard there were NO county raises for next year. You better believe I will be checking payroll records after the first of the year. We will see which officials follow suit. Does anyone know info on Commissioners girls?

  27. How do you go about getting payroll info on county? Who do you talk to and what does it cost?

  28. You can get all that information from the county auditor, glucin.

  29. I might add, there is no cost.

  30. The insurance payment program complaints fall on deaf ears with me. I have no sympathy for those who growl, because I pay my own. Even my tax preparer thinks my premiums are excessive. I am not uprated on anything, but I do not complain. I’m just grateful that I have coverage. The chronic complainers should go growl at a fence post. They’ll get as much sympathy from the post as they will get from me.

  31. Just to correct a statement above, the county is self-insured when it comes to its medical insurance for employess. I believe it pays MedBen to administer it.

  32. Ken T; I assume you’ve looked into raising your deductible. It will save you quite a bit, but you have to put away those saved dollars to cover the increased deductible. The advantage is that you have control of the money not the insurance company.

  33. One more thought: What a shame, no raises for county employees this year, yet they will still be making the same money as they did last year, unlike some of the people in the private sector who experienced huge reductions in their incomes last year, and will probably see the same in 2009.

  34. Who is MedBen? Is that Ben Nutter making extra money?

  35. MedBen, now there’s a conflict of interest! I can see it now. Fireman B.E.N. goes to rescue someone from a burning building then realizes it’s one of his insured.

  36. I hope it is easy to get payroll-someone else must be working there now. The woman who I used to get records from was not friendly and very antiquated in recordkeeping. Alot of info was not computerized and the desk was a mess. I know someone else was supposed to get trained and I hope she did, because this woman was very secretive about public records. She definately did not want to hand over info and I felt like I was bothering her in the process. Guess we will find out this week.

  37. Look at all the extra money the county will have when they get rid of Egbert, Stockner (big $$ for part time), old Bernard and her staff along with some of Egbert’s staff also.

  38. I am going to miss Bernard. If everyone only knew everything she did for charity. She was always good to deal with in my experiences in paying my taxes. Also it was nice to deal with someone closer to my age that had some experience in government. We have too many people holding offices now that think they know it all but are so ignorant.

  39. You must have had her waiting on you on a good day. I have been in there on the last day and she is always high strung and talking off her head about who was ahead of me in line. It had been time for her and staff to go and get prople in there that know what they are doing. There should also be NO blood relation between that office and Auditor. I would think someone would have done something about that years ago.

  40. I’ve only been casually following the banter back and forth on this website in the last six weeks, but I have one burning question that I hope the local blogosphere will be able to answer for me:

When are we putting up the Festivus Pole on the Courthouse lawn? Will the Tiffin Historic Trust be sponsoring something, or will we have to reach out to another organization?

Festivus for the rest of us!!!

  41. Happy Festivus to you too!

Isn’t it traditional to wait until December 23rd. I hear the commissioners are still arguing over who the “head of the household” will be for the event. I’ll bet the “6″ are pumping iron all this week.

“May Peace, Joy and Tranquility be yours through Festivus!”

  42. Actually, aluminum would be preferred to iron because of its high strength to weight ratio.

As for “head of the household” – perhaps we can have a lottery or vote of the people for charity. For a buck apiece, or 6 for five bucks, people could buy votes for whichever commissioner they want to be “head of household”, and then that commissioner would be the one who has to be pinned to the ground before Festivus celebration ends. I think it would be win-win for everyone…or at least the rest of us.

  43. Clevis, I’m laughing so hard I can barely type. Do you know a good bakery where I can get a Festivus cake? Would a tag-team be acceptible for the “head of household” event?

  44. You can find a Festivus cake in the freezer section of any grocery, and don’t forget the M & M’s! Watch for those Festivus Miracles when you’re out and about.

  45. Love Festivus. After the campaign season the only thing that will heal is a good Festivus–For the Rest of Us.

  46. Ditto on Festivus. You know they actually have e-cards for the occasion, as well as Festivus poles …

    http://www.festivuspoles.com/pages/festivus/festivus_greeting_cards.html

Which comes first, the airing of grievances or the feats of strength?

  47. Decorum dictates that the airing of grievances immediately follows the Festivus meal. The final event should always be the feats of strength.

  48. I’ve got 5 bucks to put down for 6 votes for Ben Nutter. I just think he would give the best battle and be the toughest to pin down. Who is collecting the money? Will we hold a lottery among those who donate to determine who gets to pin down the annointed “head of household”?

What charity should benefit from my largess?

  49. Okay, yeah, I know that the charity should officially be the “Human Fund,” but we could actually do this right and give someone real a boost!

  50. I would bet the courthouse renovation would have been paid for with fundraising efforts already. A couple I can think of are: A dunking booth with each of the Commissioners being dunked. Pin the tail on the Commissioner. If law enforcement charged a elected official every time they drove home drunk from a bar. These are sure fire ways that would make bundles of money for our county.

  51. I like those ideas. Surely most everyone in the county would enjoy paying to dunk the Commissioners.

  52. How bout dunking them in a tank of beer? More incentive to make em do it.

  53. How about a dunking booth/bobbing for something. Nutter could bob for beer or toothpaste, Sauber could bob for his ego or beers, and here we go…..Bridinger could bob for rolaids of whatever he is “relocating” at this time.
Or how about, Date a Commish-since we have 2 hot single ones, I am sure someone would bid on them. I could probably get dinner and a limo donated and maybe some flowers. Get ready ladies-your dream man awaits.

  54. Hey Clevis, I think it’s time to sing the 12 days of Fest’vus. I will start it out:

On the 12th day of Fest’vus, the County gave to me:
    12___________
    11___________
    10___________
    9___________
    8___________
    7 ___________
    6 ___________
    5 ___________
    4 ___________
    3 ___________
    2 ___________
    and a ______________________________

Fill in a blank if you have an idea.

  55. Speaking of closings. The Board of Elections has granted all day Christmas Eve and all day, the day after Christmas to their employees. Makes for a nice five day vacation.

  56. I WANT A JOB LIKE THAT WHICH I GET GOOD PAY, WORK LITTLE, AND MOSTLY CAN AFFORD A NUTRITIOUS MEAL.

  57. How can the Bd of Elections be any different than any other county office? Does this mean all the offices are going to be closed like that. If not, it just proves how little work that office really has to do. Lunch sales will be down during that period because that is what they do best-EAT!

  58. Found it-
Someone has to start the 12 days, what about for the final one……1 unemployed prosecutor!

  59. Who do we call to check on the Bd of Elections-I just checked the county policy manual on line and it does NOT grant the full day before, or the day after as holidays. Someone needs to do some checking on this. Tell me how and I am going to call the Bd members with my remarks. That is my tax dollars going to waste. I imagine Commissioners will be closed too because it is a Friday and they are never in then.

  60. I am also going to call the AT and see if they will give some publicity to it.

  61. 2 could be 2 full time jobs
3 feuding Commissioners and 6 would have to be 6 courthouse huggers

  62. On the 12th day of Fest’vus, the County gave to me:
    Twelve months of taxes
    Eleven emails missing
    Ten bloggers blogging
    Nine Blades a suing
    Eight Kennys crying
    Seven signs of Sauber
    Six__________________
    Five___________________
    More courthouse plans
    Three jobs for B.E.N.
    Two Terry Loves
    And a ____________________

  63. How about: Six Hipocrites

    Five Profreaders

    One Patched Chuckhole

  64. Errata:

We don’t need “Seven Kennnys crying,”

And — please! Spare us from MORE Sauber signs!

  65. Cute cute cute-we just need to fine tune it a little.
Sauber signs will always be close to our hearts…..and must be included. We could also add-1 large A-frame cruising….
By the way, there is a patched chuckhole in this county-WHERE??

  66. Pardon me! I was delusional for a moment. I thought it was a patched chuckhole, when – in truth – it was road kill. Sometimes it’s difficult to discern the difference between tar and splattered cat.

  67. Alf. It wasn’t a chuckhole it was a wood chuck.

  68. Kooka – Remember it should kind of rhyme with the original song: “6 Geese a laying”, with emphasis on “5 GOLDEN RI NGS.” The last one should rhyme with “and a partridge in a pear tree.” The last one has me stumped.

  69. The last line should be – and a win for Derek D!

  70. We have to figure out someway to include Dale Williams. Maybe 3 Dale Williams Letters to the Editor . . .

  71. Good Idea Anonymous! How about – 6 “Williams” writing. Now all we need is something for 5 with alot of emphasis.

  72. OK here it is:
On the 12th day of Fest’vus, my County gave to me:
    12 months of taxes
    11 emails missing
    10 blades a suing
    9 bloggers blogging
    Dale Williams writing
    Now Kennys crying
    6 signs of Sauber
    5 COURTHOUSE PLANS
    More lawsuits
    3 jobs for B.E.N.
    2 Terry Loves
And a win for Derek D!

  73. One more revision, then I promise I’ll quit:
On the 12th day of Fest’vus, my County gave to me:
    12 months of taxes
    11 emails missing
    10 Blades a suing
    9 bloggers blogging
    Dale Williams writing
    Now Kennys crying
    6 signs of Sauber
    BYE BYE BERNARD!
    More courthouse plans
    3 jobs for B.E.N.
    2 Terry Loves
And a win for Derek D!

  74. Found it: Don’t quit now! You’re on-a-roll!

It may bode well to include SIX COURTHOUSE HUGGERS, but it’s hard to supplant the “6 signs of Sauber!”

  75. I’m nominating “Dale Williams” as the ‘08 Man of the Year for Seneca County. He remains and unsung angel in the Bettsville community and had great influence on the results of our most recent election! Thank you, Dale, for being – simply, DALE.. Such retired executives are the backbone of our county!!

  76. As previously posted, Woody’s is closing.

  77. Gloria: I still say Dale is a woman.

  78. Maybe he’s a cross-dresser who has you fooled.

  79. Perhaps Dale WIlliams bought-out ‘Woodys.’

  80. I couldn’t resist. An additional version:

On the twelfth day of Christmas,
    my county gave to me:
    Twelve more months of taxes,
    Eleven wishful thinkers,
    Ten workers looking,
    Nine voters dreaming ,
    Eight years of nonsense,
    Seven radical views,
    Six filed a lawsuit,
    Five ideas skewed,
    Four Screwed-up years ,
    Three County Mistakes,
    Two dirty mucks,
And a courthouse sitting quite empty!
