How about a “hate blog post” instead?

The Jan. 4 edition of the A-T featured an editorial entitled “Recession demands financial restraint”. We are unable to provide a link, as the A-T does not have their Sunday Op page online. The editorial begins, “We’d likely get hate mail for saying economic recessions aren’t entirely malevolent. So we’ll quote an article from MarketWatch, an online division of the Wall Street Journal. “We’re all trapped in outdated 1990′2 wishful thinking about a ‘new economy’ and ‘perpetual growth,’ writes Paul B. Farrell, a former vice president for Financial News Network. “But the truth is, not only is a recession coming, America needs a recession.”

Please allow the SCB to be the first to respond. It really doesn’t matter if you personally say the recession isn’t all that bad, or quote MarketWatch, because frankly I am going to blast my e-gun at  you anyway. You see, little ol’ Seneca County does not need to be bitch slapped in order to curb spending. In case you didn’t notice, we are rather far removed from the high rollers on Wall Street who partnered up with the likes of Madoff. We don’t have cocktails with folks who create pyramid schemes, or golf with people who create glass banks made of unsecured loans.

I have never seen Seneca County caught up in a balloon of house prices that skyrocketed then crashed. San Francisco, sure. Seneca County, no. We couldn’t be more different than the people you quoted, if you tried. Does 180 degrees ring a bell?

Ohio is and has been in an economic decline for years. It has been a slow, methodical grind right into our clay topsoil that has sucked the life out of our state and county.  Cut back? We have been for years. Sure we could do more, but I am talking about overall, big picture spending here.  Absolutely nothing in this area compares to the drug-like spending and free-for-all seen in the likes of large-scale financial institutions.

Oh, and I am guessing the person who wrote that editorial has a steady paycheck, unlike hundreds of  citizens who have lost their jobs, or can’t find employment. Yeah, boy, gotta love that recession, cause it hurts so good.

And as an example of how great the recession is for us, (I just feel the love), you site Sheriff’s departments saving dollars by cutting out milk from the diets of inmates, as a possible incentive for offenders to “cut down on repeat business”. Now why didn’t the Justice Department think of that years ago?  Yes, the correlation between a recession -> lack of funds-> reduce milk for prisoners->reduce recidivism has been there all along! Why didn’t we see it ??

I sure am grateful that you cleared all this up for us. Here I was thinking that we were in a real predicament, but I guess you are right. We haven’t suffered enough.

  1. The only thing you forgot to add in your post was, “Can I get an Amen from the congregation?!!!”

    Amen!!!

  2. Personally, I think the GENIUS who came up with the theory that not providing milk to prisoners was the way to stop them from becoming repeat offenders is nothing short of BRILLIANT!! When does this guy get his Nobel?

    (More like, “Here’s your sign!”)

  3. Oh yeah – great pic. One of my favorite movies of all time!

  4. Scout: There’s another big problem besides the workforce who have lost their jobs and a steady paycheck. Small businesses owners are seeing huge drops in revenue and now those owners are faced with laying off employees and possibly going out of business. Those owners are cutting back on all sorts of spending which greatly impacts the local economy.

  5. Why not give prisoners that Melamine milk from China? Wall-Mart can supply it, and the jail population would gradually decline making for even more savings. Or perhaps Seneca County could substitute radioactive Romanian beverages with the same effect.

  6. I think the Romanian beverages would be the better option since the Sheriff can transport them back and forth with his wife. Good idea soupy.

Anyone brave enough to check county payroll and see if raises were given or if the royal 3’s plan was followed for no raises. I went there once, and what have you, and it was like pulling teeth and what have you and I felt like I wasted my time because there was no cooperation, and what have you.

  7. I have not checked as yet, but was going to later on this month.

  8. Thanks Scout-usually raises are the first pay period which is this week. My hubby works for the county.

  9. I kinda figured it would be like pulling hens teeth to get the information. My guess is they have a few folks that are upset about their taxes.
