Thanks Scout! You’re doing a great job keeping the blog ‘on the move’ in the right direction!!
We have hit the big time! You can be proud of yourself Scout-give yourself a pat on the back!
I tried to get my dog license today but the elevator was not working. I understand that the elevator has been down for two days. I was told that the janitors are trying to fix the elevator and the county is not calling an elevator company. Is county maintenance trained in elevator repair? I still need my dog license since no one would come down to help me. I cannot make it up the stairs. I think I will make a call to ADA to complain about this. I am disabled and I was not given access to government functions.
The county, I would think, must have a licensed company perform the repairs. I think the closest company is located in Findlay. They would also do inspections. I would call the Auditor and ask them what they recommend.
Congratulations on the successful move!
Henry-
I suggest you call Veterans Services as soon as they open and report this. Who will want to use the elevator if janitors are repairing it to save county money. Those guys can not even empty trash without a buddy with them. The way the offices look, you would think one of them would be smart enough to be able to clean, but they are not. The Health Dept is a mess especially the bathrooms. The guy spends his time talking to the ladies. Just ask Mrs Hoperoy/Dell about him.
Back on track-the Auditor should have came down to assist you…you have a big violation here that needs addressed.
Just a thought-stop over at Commissioners and let one of them go upstairs for you. They need to serve the public. I would gladly go get the license for you!
helpful harvey: Mrs. Hoperoy is not Mrs. Dell.
I had heard there was a connection there-sorry Jane
Spend the money and get the elevator repaired by people who know what to do.
Helpful Harvey: Mrs. Hoperoy and Mrs. Dell had the same last name. They’re probably sisters.
If you can not make it up the steps-send your dog up to get his own license. Sorry, I could not resist that one.
I do feel sorry for you-they should make arrangements for you to pay on first floor-maybe Bernard can do it since she did not get reelected and can use the extra $$.
Government must be accessible to the citizens. You were not provided access to government since you are disabled. File a complaint with the Commissioners or ADA.
beagle-
No one answers the phone at commissioners office-messages were left yesterday with no response. Bridinger says he is always there-HA!
I hope it is fixed by someone today that is qualified.
Contact the blowhard “Smilin Ed” at the firehouse. He jump right on it.
We need Commissioners that are available monday-friday 8-5pm. In the office. I cannot look in every bar, golf course or fire station to find one. For $56,000 I expect them to be available.
They might be over there at E. Millriegel testing the radar-gun.
Seems unwise to confer with the Commissioners about an elevator problem. They would have to call in the Architectural Review Board, MKC, the Hysterical Society, form a committee to study the project, and Ben would have to skip-off to Columbus with Sauber to query the Governor about grant money. In truth, maybe someone needs to reset a breaker!
Hluid leaked all over and the janitors walked in the stuff and dragged it all over the carpeting-there is a bunch of bright men. That building could be a toxic dump now.
Did you know there’s an “elevator operators union?” You know, those people who press the buttons for you in high rise buildings. Maybe they are on strike this week, or in an effort to cut fat from the County budget, the commissioners laid him off, and now the elevators stuck in the basement.
I here there’s a shortage of space in the Probate and Juvenile Court Building. Maybe they moved someones office into the elevator at the RTA.
Those “Hluid” leaks can be very DANGEROUS!
Someone call the EPA
Anon: You should spend a lot of time in the RTA building. Could it be that you work for the County?
Anon: You sure spend a lot of time in the RTA building. Could it be that you work for the County?
P.S. I guess I shouldn’t poke fun at your misspellings.
I work for myself-I do not work for the county. You are way off base. What/how I spend my time is my business. Thank you for your interest, though.
10 AM and I just called Auditor and elevator has not been worked on yet today.
FYI Whoever posted as “money bags” January 7th at 10 a.m. STOLE my name. If you don’t have enough imagination to come up with your own name, then please allow Senator Blutarsky to assign you a name.
Cool you jets, anon. There’s no need to be so defensive and without humor all the time!
Perhaps Joe Clevis can find forgiveness for your rude remarks, take you under his wing and make you his protege. There’s nobody better on this blog to teach you how to find humor in the absurdities of life.
Hey Anon – Elevator got you down? Call Otis for a lift.
But seriously, the next time this happens walk into the Recorder’s office and ask them to call the Auditor’s office and they will send someone down to help you. I witnessed this happen, and everyone was very courteous and accomodating about the situation.
My fault-between my computer and fingers it happened. I would not steal your identity. I have a life.
This is hilarious! YOU DID IT AGAIN!
Here’s what you need to do: Under “Leave a Reply” enter YOUR name in the box marked “name.” Then if you want to address a comment to a particular person, type THEIR name in the message box, followed by the message.
I think a good name for you might be “SHADOW.”
Hi! Ma names Sally. Got bad news, ma husbund banged up his 4 ba 4, so we ain’t got no weels. So I was thinkin of thumbin a ride down to the dog lisens place and heppin anon git his dog lisens.
White Fang and Black Tooth need new licenses. ShouldI bring ‘em with me to the office? Last time I took them for a walk down town, they mistook the RTA building for a urinal and sprayed it.
Hi! ma names Sally. I’ll be comin inta town on the Dale Wilyums Chuck Wagon. Soupy,if ya wate on the corner will pick ya up.
Should we suggest that the Auditor install a drive-thru window for dog owners to conveniently pick up dog licenses. You could bring the dog along in the car (and we all know how much dogs love that) for verification of breed, size, etc. B.E.N. could man the window, since it’s too cold to be golfing.
Does the 5% cutback include smaller portions of Gro Pup at the pound?
Money bags-I did not realize I did it again and I am truely sorry. I am visually impaired and that it part of my problem. Thank you for the name.
Suggestion for old “money” and new “money” –
The original should stay “money bags”
The new one should be “OPM” or “Other peoples’ money”!!!
(My name’s Joe Clevis…and I approve of this message…”)
I get the dog licenses through the mail. Much easier.
Will the renovated Court House have elevators that are operational, stretching to the top-floor?
Still no sign of a repairman in the area-day 4 is tomorrow and the grease is still all over. The janitors have not cleaned that up yet.
Sounds like an Oil Spill to me! Time to bring-in the respirators, goggles, boots, and white coveralls..
This senator does not assign names…that is unless you feel like contributing to my reelection fund. That’s not corruption, it’s capitalism at its best.
Maybe Smiling Ed can clean it up!
Smilin Ed has replaced Jimmy Carter as the politician with the biggest Chiclet smile. Several A-T readers report snow blindness after looking at the swearing in photo last week. Can Columbus be the next step in the lightning political rise of this flawless philosopher.
The “Smilin Ed” picture was possibly the CHEESIEST picture I’ve ever seen. The man is obviously more interested in his public image than in his responsibilities towards the people who (God knows why) hired him.
Has anyone at the Public Urinal explained just why the elevator hasn’t been fixed yet? I’d call the ADA people – and if there’s really grease all over the place, I’d call the Health Department, too. That can’t be safe.
There is grease all over the carpeting, stair rails, etc from the janitors making a mess.
The elevator is now on day 4 of being out of order. Have the 3 commissioners learned a lesson yet? I doubt it-call the professionals.
Why isn’t Smilin Ed in personal command? It would be a great photo op.
I think Smilin Ed should use the bucket truck and lift people up to the second floor-that would be fun for everyone.
I heard no repairman is in sight at this time.
This is in response to a post by Wonderer above:
I agree the commissioners should be in the office from 8am-5pm with no exceptions.
They should not attend any meetings outside that office…ever!
They should never try and do anything that could be remotely considered forward thinking or proactive.
They should sit there in their office all day and wait for you to “maybe” call or stop by.
They should never attend any meetings concerning the Connect Ohio program, the Emergency Operations Center, or any outside meetings.
I mean, come on, if it isn’t in the Commissioners Office, it isn’t really a meeting, right?
If we can’t record every word, waste lots of time making them go back over every DVD detail, then why do we have commissioners?
I say we burn them….they are probably witches anyway.
/end sarcasm
Is anyone else thinking that Anonymous is SAUBER? I can’t help but feel his presence in this posting. Hmmmmmmmmmm………………….
curious: I don’t think you’re right, but it would be funny if you were. That would mean that six anonymouses sued another anonymous! Who knows?!!!
Heard there were some upset county employees that
were referred to as janitors on this blog-we must extend out sincere apology and it will not happen again. Shame on all of us.
curious, the blogger who posted as anonymous sounds like someone who knows the difference between all talk and no action, so it can’t be Sauber.
Are any of those who blog, any different? Why is it that we haven’t figured out how to “come out of the blog” and do something to change the way things are in the county. We complained this past year about what we didn’t like, but we took no collaborative action to create change. Here we are again this year, still complaining about the same issues and two who are still in office.
Talk and no action – sounds like politicians to me.
Seneca County Sanitation Engineer
Got it…duly noted.
No shame in being a janitor….at least they have a job.
on a side note:
I did not realize that some of the best retirements out there right now are McDonalds employees.
McDonalds matches up to 11% of the employees contribution to a 401K.
Realizing that 11% of not a whole lot is still not very much….but that aint bad.
Better than most.
School Janitors have STRS retirement. Nothing wrong with that either.
It is one of their bosses from what I heard-you just got the wrong one.
To the Commissioner or anonymous. I understand that Commissioners go to meetings away from the office sometimes. I do think that the Commissioners Office should at least be open Monday through Friday with someone there. I thought government services were supposed to be available and accessible to taxpayers. If we ran every business and industry like government no one would have a job in this country.
I thought Scout said the commissioners were only part-time. They show up to their county commissioner meetings on a part-time basis.
Just a thought. Sometimes I think there are too many meetings – we talk about doing something. I have been involved with many a meeting, there are many who won’t step up and actually put the talking into action. It is usually the same few. Is it “no time”, fear of success or are we just a let’s talk about it community and wait for someone else to do it for us. Wisha…Coulda..Shoulda…
The state of Ohio considers the commissioners job part-time. The state also mandates their pay.
Yes the Commissioners are Part-Time. They are considered part-time but at $56,000 a year we should expect more than minimal effort. In many counties our size the Commissioners put in full-time hours for the same pay as ours. Maybe those Commissioners have a little more pride or want their counties to progress. Also the Commissioners are considered part-time but what about their office staff that works FULL TIME. Most people just expect government offices to be open during normal business hours.
There is a book out there with a thesis that: “There is much matter for meetings, but not many meetings that really
matter. ” Frequently, that is true!
I have never been in the commissioners office personally, but apparently you guys spend lots of time there.
Enough time to know that they are closed a good portion of the time.
What do you say that we start keeping a watch on the place, maybe assign a duty roster to guard the building and keep track of the actual time they are open?
I’ll take the first shift. I will head down there tomorrow and sit in the lobby all day. If they aren’t open I will sit in my car and wait until they do….and if they don’t open at all, I will post that tomorrow night.
Actually….that’s all crap.
I won’t do that and neither will any of you.
But you will complain because the ONE time you called they were too busy to answer the phone…probably chasing down some Sunshine law complaint, or some other white elephant.
-or-
Perhaps you went there ONCE and the office was closed due to holiday, mandatory training session, or the monthly Regional meetings that they attend, or maybe there was a combination of events that cascaded and caused the office to be closed the ONE time you were there.
Like I said, I have never been in the office itself. I’ve been by there many times, and it is ALWAYS open on the weekdays. Not sure who is in there..but someone is.
Not sure why I am defending them….but they can’t be that bad….
You guys re-elected them.
I didn’t vote for either of them.
I can tell you that each time I have gone to the Comm. Office, they have been open. Each time I have emailed, I have gotten a reply immediately. Everyone in the office has been prompt and professional.
Probably there should be someone to cover the office and phones on the occasion of required meetings outside the building and/or if the staff has the privilege of flex time. I imagine they have a employee policy handbook or office procedures they follow.
It’s not the “being” in the office that matters – it’s whether they actually “do” anything while they’re in there, that is the issue with me.
Is it possible for an Ohio County to create a plan to reorganize its government along the lines of a “city manager” concept? Part of the inefficiency and bumbling at the county level is due to the amateur status of most of the commissioners we elect. We pay these people big bucks, they act like cocks of the walk, and usually bring nothing to the job in the way of professional adminstrative and managerial expertise.
I’d rather make the commissioners a non paid oversight policy board and combine their 3 salaries into one strong administrator with executive power over budget, hiring, etc. The $150,000+ we are paying the commisioners world be better spent in hiring a professionally educated manager who understands management and public policy.
Who knows how we can start the ball rolling?
That makes sense but will most likely not happen. The Commissioners definitely are not going to push for that type of government. They already collect their salaries and have a County Administrator in most counties in Ohio. We should explore all options to make government can become more efficient and affordable. Doubt anyone making $56,000 a year wants to propose eliminating their job though.
Yes we can, Asa.
“getsomethingdone” and I have had extensive interplay about this issue before you came on board. “get” is rather well-schooled on the topic, so hopefully he’ll add his two cents to this topic again. But, in short, we can do it. 87 of the 88 counties are like ours. I believe Summit County has a charter form of county government.
In order for it to happen, obviously it would have to be passed by a plebiscite. I have not researched the parameters to determine whether it would be by simple majority or if a super majority would be required.
(I’m Joe Clevis, and I approve of this message. Paid for by Committee to Manage County Government, Asa Seewald, Treasurer…)
At one point, I believe former commissioner Joe Schock was interested in charter government for the county as well.
It’s a sad state of affairs that we have reached the point where three local commissioners sense that they have all the answers, control all matters, and have the power to dictate all County business.
If the voters of Seneca County discern that it is in the best interests of the populace, it’s time we band together, follow all legal steps to make changes, and DO IT!
Do it before the next phase of their administrative bungling unfolds! He who hesitates HAS LOST! Go get ‘em Asa, Joe, and all other fine Americans
Hey, I’m the deciders!!!
Please…. go build your Library, and stay out of Seneca County matters. The “Three Muskateers” are doing enough to mess us up in Tiffin. We don’t need your kind to bumble about and make things worse!
We just voted these guys in a couple of months ago, and you guys are already talking impeachment.
Biggest bunch of negative minds ever consolidated.
I passed the link to this site on to my friends in North Carolina.
I worked for county goverment in North Carolina many years ago, and they use the County manager style of government.
Imagine having Carty Finkbeiner as your county manager. That would be MUCH better than having three guys wouldn’t it? I’m not saying the three guys we have are the answer….but geez….these guys have been here for years.
We had a chance to get rid of them and failed.
So it ain’t their fault, it’s OURS.
Anonymous you are right in some respect because we voted them back into office; however, they are arrogant to think they make a difference in this county and ran again. Sometimes have to put pride and ego aside for the betterment of the county and they didn’t!
Nobody suggested “impeachment”! We’d still have 3 commissioners, but they would be an oversight board. A professional county manager would implement plans and run things on a professionakl day-to-day basis. If the manager turns out to a Carty Finkbeiner, he can immediately be fired and replaced. Trying to remove an elected official is next to impossible until the next election. And here, due to low turnouts and 3 way races, we often elect leaders with less than a mandate. The county-city manager model works well in creating as more efficient government.
You could also establish a system with a kind of board of directors with 5, 7, 9 or however many managers you want. Who said we have to limit it to one Carty-type manager? Perhaps a larger board with fewer individual responsibilities would work better.
When all is said and done, we’re still operating under the same system of government established by the Northwest Ordinance, long before computers, cars, internets, television, radio, telegraph, peanut butter and ball point pens. Are y’all telling me that no one in the time since could come up with a better way than the way we’ve been running it for 200+ years?
P.S. Only 11 more days ’til I getta go huntin’ with Cheney!
Is there any truth to the rumor I heard that Palin is coming to Seneca County for the big dinner?
Joe: Be safe, wear a helmet and bullet proof vest. I too am glad he can spend more time hunting the country is better off but hunters beware.
There appears to be some transformational thinking going on here.
Representative or direct ..either way citizens have to want things to succeed!
Nothing gained, nothing lost, nothing done.
What dinner? Who is providing the china?
Ohio USA – did you contact the SIEDC yet?
Yep – no feedback.
A true-blue Board is a group that governs, not micro-manages, an organization. Good board members allow an organization’s management team to perform day-to-day work. The board should exist to make governing decisions that aid the management team in staying on task and accomplishing their goals.
Look at school boards as an example of exactly this formula for success board leadership. They create policies that keep a district’s mission on track, and allow the Superintendent to manage day-to-day activity in the schools.
Having said all that, I agree that Asa and Joe’s ideas COULD work in the Commissioner’s office. Our 3 commissioners could be much more effective in a governance role, while a true managerial leader could steer the ship.
How can one llearn about this revolutionary idea? …in the Ohio Revised Code (302 sections)?
Too bad you were not “snowbound” long ago!
What’s so wrong with wanting the present system to function successfully? Just asking!
What’s wrong, Ohio, you ask? Nothing inherently wrong…it just really doesn’t work efficiently and well anymore. That’s why most of us don’t use quill pens anymore either.
What’s the harm in investigating a change? Can’t Seneca County be on the leading edge for once? I say we check it out, kick the tires, and give it a go. We don’t have to buy it in the end, but it’s worth the test drive!
Okay thanks for your input Joe….but no test drives today…Seneca County is under a snow emergency!
Ohio USA, let us know if you get any feedback from SIEDC. I sent out a request by e-mail to Rich, hoping for a response. Good Luck to all of us!
That makes three of us!
“managerial leadership” is as much of an oxymoron as military intelligence.
There is a HUGE difference in a manager and a leader.
Unfortunately, we have neither.
Does that mean we could prune the Big Three and their $56K each from our balance sheet and simply add a quality professional for about $90K + fringes?
I’m liking this better all the time.
In many counties the Commissioners are respected and work well together. Some of our elected officials are jokes in other counties. I go on a business trips to other counties on a regular basis. Just talk with another Commissioner or other elected official and hear some of the comments. Some people know how to make Seneca County proud.
Since I am disabled can Sauber plow my driveway on Fridays also. Obviously we have time between all our meetings on Fridays to do plowing. I will trade a case a beer for my clear driveway.
Sauber can do anything he wants and he still gets re-elected.
So he could plow your driveway….be completely smashed from your case of beer, and continue on down the road to his next collision, plow out the driveway while plowed.
And STILL get re-elected by the people who continue to complain about how awful he is.
I say he is a great guy.
This is an AWESOME country, state, and county….where the fully functional alcoholic has a multitude of jobs, when most have none.
Maybe that’s the key to getting a job in this county.
Perhaps it’s time we all started drinking heavily……
When the dopes in this country decided that electing a president on the basis of “This guy is just like me…the kind of guy I’d like to have a beer with”, we were sunk. We get what we wish for (and elect). Bush and assorted locals of the same kind. We love mediocrity. We loath intelligence. It makes us uncomfortable when our leaders are smarter than we are. But, like the hypocrites and back fence blabbers we are, we bitch about how awful our rube leaders are after we elect them and how we could do their jobs better. After all, they are no better than we are. Pass me a Bud Light, I may run next time…”Soupy the Plumber”…”Soupy the Commish”…..(gulp)…(gee) “Soupy and Sarah in ‘12 “.
Vote for me “no smarter than most and dumber than the rest.”
Lemme see, my cabinet choices…Larry the Cable Guy at CIA, that fat golfer who likes booze for Interior, Hank Williams Jr at Defense, Brittany at UN, “Helluva Job Brownie” at Commerce…Goofy at Education…Toby Keith at Transportation…Tom Cruise Surgeon General…Tom Noe head of the U.S. Mint…James Trafficant Attorney General…Ted Nugent at Fish and Wildlife…Homer Simpson at FBI…Beavis and Butthead at Homeland Security…Michael Vick at the Humane Society…Captain Buckeye Navy Secretary…Flippo the Clown at agriculture…
It worked- put a case of beer outside at the end of my driveway and when I returned several hours later it was totally plowed. I am really impressed that Sauber helped me out on a day like this, even though he threw the empties all over my front yard before he left. I did NOT vote for him, but he helped out a taxpayer in need and thats what really counts! I love this county!
Barstool it may be nice that your driveway was plowed for beer but I do not like drunks on the road. It is not right to do plowing business after drinking. I think all our elected officials think about is booze.
Hey kids, remember how we discussed behavior during work is ok to discuss, but the rest is not? Let’s knock off Sauber.
Anybody have a cheer here for the county road crews?
I sure do. The folks out my way are great, and have been for years!
They just went by my house again. Kudos to Tiffin Public Works.
They must be busy-they have not been back to Wentz
street since this morning.
Townships could use some praise for their efforts too. Anybody remember the blizzard of ‘78? Neighbors really helped neighbors during that spell.
What’s the report from the Fostoria area?
There was a December AP story about that town that used spicy garlic salt on the road in December? Iowa I think. Some company donated it to the city so it wouldn’t go into a landfill. Said it worked but made the crews a little hungry.
I heard about that last week. Didn’t remember where it was, but it was Morton that donated the garlic salt.
Garlic bread, anyone?
I woke up at 3:30am, only to see THREE plows/salt trucks going by my place, one after the other, obviously on their way somewhere. Most impressive, when the economy is supposed to be too bad to allow for extra salt, extra hours, extra gas, etc.
On the other hand, my parents live on a side street, and they basically gave up long ago on getting their street plowed. Everyone just goes out and does their section of the street.
This blog seriously amazes me.
Can’t complain about the guys because they are doing a good job?
Complain because they are doing too GOOD of a job.
But I think Puddin covered both aspects of it there.
Too much for him ….not enough for his parents.
If you went out and spent your stimulus money on a snow blower we could lay off all those county employees and sell those snow plows.
That would save us money….somehow.
How well I recall the Blizzard of ‘78. AND….. I remember a Township plow — [in another county] ….. that avoided families in need so he could plow a path to a buddy’s barn where his friend’s two horses were housed.
Those priorities seemed to be a bit skewed. At least the Government used helicopters to drop milk for distribution from community centers.
It is always difficult to get plowing done and coordinate with the weather. Go too earlier, and you waste resources. Go too late, and it is overwhelming. One of the nice things living in the country as opposed to town actually is the plowing issue. In town the streets are narrow and lined with cars. Getting plowing done in town is a thousand times more difficult. Out in the county, all they have to do is move the snow. I can call our folks on their cell phones if I need them. How about that for service!!
What does the Blizzard of 78 have to do with any of this. I know we’ve had at two least two large blizzards in the last six years that we can refer too. Moreover, Im extremely happy with the plowing of the major streets. You know, if they really tried to efficiently plow the sidestreets that would require people moving their cars elsewhere or those cars getting snowed in. Either way, people would complain. I know in other cities when it gets bad, they close the sidestreets to any parking and tow anyone who violates that rule. (Neat way to make revenue) and they designate school lots as temp. emerg. parking until they get the sidestreets clean.
I wonder doesn anyone know how the plowing responsiblity is devided here, incorporated Tiffin and Fostoria, vs. the county, vs. State routes vs. U.S. routes.
Anonymous: I was NOT complaining about anything. I was expressing admiration that the plows were doing so MUCH with what everyone has been saying were limited resources.
My parents do not live on a main drag….they’ve always had this situation to deal with. They’re dealing with it the way they normally do – neighbors helping neighbors (see OhioUSA’s post 8 messages up).
Pardon my attitude here, but you really need to read what’s in front of you, and not interpret it through your own negative expectations of people.
Sheesh!!!
Sen. – each group is responsible for their own roads.
Senator: Sorry if my reference seemed out of date. 1978 blizzard was 30 years ago and an important year in my family’s record book!
Did everyone make is through work today? It was another one of the ho hum days. We need some excitement!
What ya got in mind?
Not much going on that is news worthy. The only thing I heard today is that Nutter is President of the Board this year. Other than that, nothing exciting. I heard that from the AT reporter who was looking for news himself.
I heard that the A-T has been really struggling to find
stories to write about.
Senator: You are cool, and always on target, but….. this time I take a bit of issue with you. It is obvious from your posts that you did not live in northern Ohio during the Blizzard of ‘78.
NOTHING, since then, compares with the Great Blow-and-Chill of ‘78. It is the benefit of us all that we have not had a repeat performance! I hope you are not pushed to endure such troubles!
When will Bridinger have a turn to be president? Nutter acts like he is whether its official or not. Sauber had a shot. Who decided?
Maybe there should be some investigative reporting.
Nutter and Sauber don’t even have the decency to talk to Bridinger to his own face. At the ABR meetings, they’d lean back and whisper behind Bridinger’s back, like a couple of kindergarten kids.
Why would they make someone prez who they obviously consider to be persona non grata?
Nothing will change. Nutter will continue to pretend to speak for everyone, and he’ll still be the master of the Bitch and Moan.
Oh yeah, almost forgot – and Sauber will just keep following Nutter’s lead. Every time Nutter comes to a sudden stop, Sauber will continue to have to wipe the brown off his nose, like he did even when he was “supposed” to be prez of the board.
Whispering behind backs and in a huddle talking is very unprofessional. I have seen it in several offices along with commissioners and it is very childish. Is that what we are paying you for?
Sauber slams Bridinger over his Rolaids incident. Everyone makes mistakes in life and some people pay big for those mistakes. If we tried to elect perfect people to political office then none of the existing office holders should remain.
The new game for nutter is to bring his experts in to dispute everything the courthouse group has to say but bring nothing to back up there opinions but in Ben’s eyes it is fact because they say exactly what they have been paid to say at the taxpayers expense.
Old Timer, good observation. But isn’t it also ironic that after 2 years of denial, Nutter and Sauber are now saying that we should go after grants?
Also, we thought the days of paying for outside legal advice were over. Not.
Gracie says: I heard that the A-T has been really struggling to find
stories to write about.
How so? It seems to me, they have MORE than enough news. Every time the county or the city sneezes, it’s recorded. Every story from the commissioners goes on for thirty or forty inches. They cover the hell out of cute kids doing cute things. Tiffin Reports seems to cover all the crime and goings-on you’d expect. Every little village story is there — like today, the story from Attica goes on and on about some dope who stole quarters from car wash.
I know, they’re the only game in town. But all said, they’re not all that bad. I took a tour a few weeks back, and it was enlightening. Somewhat.
While I side with the complaints about the A-T, I must admit that the “same old/same old” is typical of most newspapers of the nation. I can cite any number of papers that were once a joy to read.. Now, they can be absorbed and ready for recycling in five-to-ten minutes — major papers and local rags alike. The writers are second-rate. The spell-check goes unused. Wages of the employees are second-rate. It’s a bad scenario all-the-way-around.
Capt. – It wasn’t meant to be a slam to the A-T, just
reporting what I heard. News seems to be slow around here. anon wanted excitement and I just
stated there didn’t seem to be much. George always
tells me that people misunderstand what I’m trying to
say.
I hope I didn’t come across as too much of a fan of The A-T, because I am not. I suppose I’m more sympathetic after taking the tour, and seeing how things are done.
I think my biggest complaint is the amount of inanity. I know the A-T is the first stop for many reporters and editors, that it’s a so-called “stepping stone” — but damn, it shows most days.
Maybe I’m looking for a more serious product. One that doesn’t get bogged down in all of the excruciating tit-for-tat, one that’s a little more discerning in what it prints; one that pays more attention to detail.
And one that doesn’t hit the recycling bin in ten minutes, as Mr. Tankerous pointed out.
Oh well. We get what our 50 cents buys us, I suppose.
I’m only 32 years old, so I can’t speak knowledgeably about the days when the A-T was a joy to read. I’ll ask the older posters: Did such a day exist here in Tiffin?
Addendum:
If such a day did exist, tell us about that. Specifically, what did the paper do differently then as opposed to now.
The thing that gripes me the most about the A(wful) T(errible) is the cootsie-poo headlines on every daggone story they run! It isn’t even funny, and it is unprofessional. Can’t they just stick to the basics?
If I want humor, I come to the Seneca County Blog and read Clevis and Capt. Ridiculous and getsomethingdone!
Exactly. The Onion does humor day in and day out, and does it well. The A-T, not so much.
Did you see last week when there were worms all over the front page? What the hell was that about? Am I missing something?
I was around when Tap Rogers published the A-T. It was a home owned old-time newspaper with good writing, professional editors, and a solid news slant. Conservative, yes, but it treated the local population like they were intelligent, not a bunch of morons.
I often browse the old A-T on microfilm at the library. You should too. Check out any reel between 1935-1965. You’ll be impressed. The current A-T is a joke by contrast. It is really an ad sheet for the Wheeling combine.
The cutsy headlines and coy writing only part of the problem. Proofreading in non-existent. They even spelled my name I.C. Seemalt. Mr. Van Camp. Mr. Thompson, the Hessons must be twirling in their graves at far the current A-T has fallen. Then, most of the old, classic Tiffin we knew has gone to the dogs too. Like in a Faulkner novel, the Snopeses have taken over.
I agree Asa that the paper of old was better. I found
a bunch of papers from 1950’s through the 1960’s at
my grandparents house. I so enjoyed reading them.
The feature articles were interesting and I couldn’t help but notice that the paper actually conveyed a sense of pride in community.
I did temp work at the Absolutely-Terrible back in the early ’80’s for a few mos, and what I saw was just ridiculous. It was still an afternoon paper at that time, and the only time I ever saw the place work efficiently was the day the Challenger exploded. Kauffman had the entire front page of that paper torn down and recomposed in about half an hour – and did it while typing, and looking over his shoulder, at the same time, at the portable tv someone had set up over on the editorial side.
Mr. Bean (HA! What an appropriate name!) used to tape $20 bills to the back of the advertising department’s front counter, as an encouragement for the classified people do sell the most ads – whoever sold the most at the end of the day got the $20. Beaner also used to pull Allan Dietrich away from scheduled photography assignments so he could have him take pictures of him shooting hoops at the Y, so he could display them all over the building.
The names have changed over there, and it’s now a morning rag, but not much else has changed. And the ridiculous headlines they print are mostly vague rock-n-roll plays on words that the average citizen over the age of 65 couldn’t possibly understand. They apparently thing it’s “clever” – I think it’s childish and rather twee.
I worked for the AT for a couple of years back in my early retirement yrs. doing odd jobs for them. There biggest priority was just get the paper to print there was always something braking down or keeping the sorting and stacking room staffed so the paper could be delivered. No time to worry about the news or how it was written most of it was just copyed from news sources anyway. The thing I hate most is there opinion page with all there one sided and redundant oped pieces along with there own meaningless editorials.
I just came fom getting my dog license and you would not believe who got a job at Auditor’s office and HE is doing dog licenses……..snicker snicker, can we have some guesses?

Seneca County email recovery efforts sure look pale in comparison to the latest White House directive from Justice Kennedy
