Seneca County Unfair

(Ah yes, Scout the computer challenged has appeared!)

For years the Seneca County Fair has experienced a myriad of problems including lower attendance, diminished exhibitors, and a solid reputation for treating newly elected directors with innovative ideas shabbily until such time as they give up and quit. One of my favorite stories involves the director who attempted to vote for the director’s election.

The director’s hold office on a staggered basis and therefore elections are held to vote on these offices. Well it seems one fellow director showed up to vote, but didn’t have his membership card handy. Now the goofs running the election could have just looked up his number in the book, but instead they told him he wasn’t allowed to vote! It’s a damn director on the fairboard for pete’ sake and they couldn’t be bothered. Well the director couldn’t be bothered to work with such a group either, and tendered his resignation. Good for him.

But this year they stooped to new lows. For many a year, the boy scouts loaded up a wagon with cold, bottled water and pulled it along to merchants, etc. so they could buy a drink and not have to leave their booth. (The fairboard expects your booth to be manned at all times.) The boy scouts didn’t exactly make a killing on this bit of entrepreneurship, but it pulling in about $150.00. Not this year, by gawd. They were told it wasn’t fair to the other food vendors, of which the fair board added six more this year making the fair grounds wall to wall food vendors.

In protest one merchant, a good fellow who coincidentally is an advocate for scouting, vowed never to return to the fair. I vowed to write this story so that folks would know about this incident. So this is our unfair board, out to put those bad, boy scouts in their place. Good Grief.

PS. If you can, drop the scouts off a buck or two because I am their advocate too.

  1. Good News! Scout is back. We were getting worried. I for one would go out of my way to buy something from a cub scout. I wonder which vender was complaining of them their cub scouts cuttin’ into their profits Shameful!!

  2. Back in the dark ages when I was A Boy Ranger we received free pass to the fair for the whole time as long as we wore our uniforms. Are job was too assets the dis players and help keep the fair grounds clean. It provided me many happy summer days that I will never forget.

  3. Very sorry to hear of this scenario. I was thinking the fair must have had very good gates this year and perfect weather.

  4. I thought the fair was awlful this year. I will NOT be attending next year. Where was the petting zoo, the chainsaw carver and the many vendors in the merch. building? The Merch. bulding is a joke! It looked like a BIG garage sale this year. The board charges so much money for a space, no one wants to set up. Seneca County Fair should take lessons from Sandusky County Fair. Their’s is GREAT! Seneca County Fair has now turned into a FOOD FAIR…thats all that was there!

  5. How funny you mention our county to the north. Our county fair board has always turned up their noses to their methods of raising revenue.

  6. It’s been a long time since I saw anything about a Seneca County Prosecutor garnering delinquent funds from anyone! Refreshing, isn’t it, to read about a local elected official who is doing his job?

Makes me wonder if he’s dogging deadbeat parents too!

  7. Makes you wonder if people just try to get away with not paying their dues or if they actually just needed prompting. I too applaud the prosecutor for taking the time to communicate and investing in the expense of a stamp to prompt responsibility.

    On another note….
Does anyone know if Seneca County officials apply for funding for criminal justice related program projects through the JAG or VAWA grant programs? I noticed that in the first round Patchworks House got some but Lucas and Sandusky County had several projects funded in the first round amounting to lots of dollars.

Every time I read about these dollars flowing somewhere else I wonder if Seneca County could be bringing in more bucks to supplement what we can provide locally and wonder what we should be doing that we aren’t.

  8. Seems to me that the “bean counters” of the Seneca County Fair Board should be advised the the sun will shine on the morrow, even if the Chairman of the Board comes to vote without his verification card. Board members who do not recognize the Chairman of the Board belong in a Rubber Room.

After all, the Fairgrounds are not the Parade Grounds of Parris Island!

  9. Are you talking about Frank Sinatra?

    Otherwise, I am confused

  10. How about a new subject? How many people can we get to go to the Tea Party in Fremont on Sept. 12th?

  11. Oh where, Oh where has our little “Scout” gone? Oh where, Oh where can she be?

  12. She or He?

  13. She.

  14. Did you know at the last flea market, the fair board turned down 50 vendors from coming in? There was no room where they nomally put them. Why didn’t they put them in the infield? Look at that lost revune! What were they thinking?

  15. “Thinking” = Fair Board……

    Somewhat like “military” intelligence

  16. I see that Mayor Borof is making new friends. Seems to me that the only buildings he cares about in this town are the ones in his way.

  17. I think there’s more to that story than was presented in print. 1. Why would the City be interested in purchasing that building when the City has no money? 2. Why does the City want to displace a viable business? 3. If the purchase of that building has nothing to do with the river wall reconstruction, then why has the river wall project come to a halt near that building? 4. Did someone forget to engineer that building into the river wall project? 5. Is the City backed into a corner?

  18. I see from today’s A-T that Tiffin Service Cabs may soon be sporting “Montz for Mayor” signs, if that’s not a Tiffin Sign Code violation. Mr. Omlor, owner of Tiffin Service Cabs could be Montz’s official campaign chauffer, offering free rides to the polls for local residents who can’t drive?

  19. Not “Montz for Mayor” (he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Heck), but

    “ANYBODY BUT BOROFF FOR MAYOR”

  20. Eye – I don’t know about that. Montz recieved a surprising number of votes when he ran against Hohman.

  21. Those where anti-hohman votes. People are watching him on council now. He shows no back bone or strength or any other signs of leadership. Sorry. he’s a nice kid, but not a leader.

  22. Eye, When you call out someone like that.(Having know back bone). You should be more specific.
He did stand up tp the Gustapo and tell him they arn’t going to raid the sewer fund didn’t he?

  23. Eye – You’re the one that said “A B B F M.” I don’t think lack of back bone is the problem. If he’s smart he’ll keep quiet, listen and learn, then make a move at local leadership; then he can take the anti-Boroff votes.

  24. Hey – just one man’s opinion based on what I hear. I hear that the old boys club scare him when they get mad. Maybe the sources were wrong. What this city REALLY needs is Galipeau to run for mayor. He’d take it in a landslide and put this city back on a path to success.

  25. Eye – That’s a good suggestion too!

  26. Who’s in charge of the old boys’ “club”? Is it made of wood or more like an aluminum baseball bat.
Who was it that said, “Speak softly and carry a big stick?”

  27. Speak softly? The guy’s a screamer.

  28. And he murders Jews. For the fun of it.

  29. I don’t thinkTiffin was the host town in the movie “Roadhouse” . Regardless Speak I here it is a 10 degree, Titanium head, Steel shaft Big Bertha. But that is just a rumor. I’m not in the “club”.

  30. Sgt. Schultz – My reference to speak softly and carry a big stick was actually in reference to Councilman Montz. Eye on Tiffin believes Montz is too quiet and is intimidated by the “old boys’ club,” but I’m saying beware of those who “speak softly.” I still think Montz has a chance at Mayor in the next race if he so chooses.

  31. Speak… I agree.

  32. For the past year I have heard rumors about this blog…so I went in search of it….I have discovered that there are quit a few folks out there making comments on subjects they know nothing of….making comments on half truths and little facts. The hatered and mistrust in this community runs deep……..does anyone have a kind word to say about anything…..?????????????

This town has SO many skeletons in it’s closet….NO one has any room to talk about anyone else. Take a good look in the mirror……the last local campaign was deplorable…..ended up some of the “Big Mouths” had to eat crow over their comments….they were elected dispite there lack of the FACTS! They know who they are……we are about to go into another round of local campaigns…..put on your boots and get your shovels out to wade through the pile of ______!

  33. Hey, Shopgirl! Please provide me with a map to the “town that does not have skeletons in its closet!”

  34. It is most interesting that the “Biggest Mouths” in Tiffin have the most skeletons! Facts are Facts, rumors have little or no merit and more times than not the “People in the know” don’t know much!
